A Comparison of the Great Mississippi River Floods of 1993 and 2011: Implications for Crop Insurance and Reinsurance AgEcon
Vergara, Oscar.
The flooding situation in 2011 is similar in nature to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1993, but different in the particulars. First, the timing of the flood within the growing season is different. Second, the two floods occurred in different regions, with the 1993 flood affecting a portion of the Corn Belt and the 2011 flood affecting a region farther south. While floodwaters have inundated several million acres of cropland in 2011, yield losses from delayed planting are expected to be limited. Furthermore, the affected states from the current flood are primarily Group 2 states under the current SRA, which are provided with greater reinsurance protection by the government than the Group 1 states.

Environmental Policy, Education and Growth: A Reappraisal when Lifetime Is Finite AgEcon
Pautrel, Xavier.
This article demonstrates that when finite lifetime is introduced in a Lucas (1988) growth model, the environmental policy may enhance growth both in the short- and the long-run, while pollution does not influence educational activities, labor supply is not elastic and human capital does not enter the utility function. This is because finite lifetime and the appearance of newborns at each date creates a turnover of generations which disconnects the aggregate consumption growth to the interest rate. We show that the shorter is the horizon, the greater the effect of the environmental policy on growth, because the higher the “generational turnover effect”. We also demonstrate that when time is not the single production factor in education, the environmental...

Impact of the New Standard Reinsurance Agreement (SRA) on Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) Gain and Loss Probabilities AgEcon
Vergara, Oscar; Seaquist, Jack; Zuba, Gerhard; Harrigan, Matthew; Lee, Eric.
We utilize an agricultural model that uses crop/weather relationships at the county resolution and fits robust distributions that take into account the impact that weather has on crop production. Once the crop insurance policy conditions and prices are applied to the modeled county yield distributions, the portfolio gain and losses can be calculated by aggregating the gain and losses at the county level, state level, regional level and nationwide level. Portfolio losses are computed under the old and new SRA rules and regulations for comparison purposes.

LA FRACCIÓN LIVIANA DE LA MATERIA ORGÁNICA DE UN SUELO VOLCÁNICO BAJO DISTINTO MANEJO AGRONÓMICO COMO ÍNDICE DE CAMBIOS DE LA MATERIA ORGÁNICA LÁBIL Agricultura Técnica
Zagal,Erick; Rodríguez,Nicasio; Vidal,Iván; Flores,A. Bárbara.
Starting from an 18-year experiment with different crop rotations, samples of soil of volcanic origin from the foothills of Ñuble (37º09’ S lat.; 72º02’ W long.) were obtained in order to determine the effect of agricultural management on light fraction (FL) of the organic matter. FL was separated by density using NaI (d = 1,8 g cm-3). Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents were determined by dry combustion both in the whole soil and the isolated FL. Light fraction contents were higher than those found in other research with non-volcanic soils. However, a clear trend to decrease FL was observed when soil use was intensified. The C or N proportions of the soil and the FL presented similar results. The use of this fraction as a sensitive indicator of changes...

Nitrogen dynamics in soil management systems. I - flux of inorganic nitrogen (NH4+ and NO3-) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo

In agricultural systems the N-NH4+ and N-NO3- contents is significantly affected by soil management. This study investigated the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen (N; NH4+ and NO3-) in an experimental evaluation of soil management systems (SMSs) adopted in 1988 at the experimental station of the ABC Foundation in Ponta Grossa, in the Central South region of the State of Paraná. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in N-NH4+ and N-NO3- flux in the surface layer of a Red Latosol arising from SMSs over a 12-month period. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design in split plots, in three replications. The plots consisted of the following SMSs: 1) conventional tillage (CT); 2) minimum tillage (MT); 3) no-tillage with...

Time-separable Utility, Leisure and Human Capital Accumulation: What New Implications for the Environment-Growth Nexus? AgEcon
Pautrel, Xavier.
Using a time-separable utility function where leisure is introduced through the disutility of working time and is adjusted for quality, as measured by human capital to capture home production, we demonstrate that the environmental policy is harmful for growth. A tighter environmental tax reduces the incentives to educate by increasing leisure time and lowers the steady-state growth rate and lifetime welfare, whatever the source of pollution. We also demonstrate that the intertemporal elasticity of substitution in labor supply plays a crucial role in the marginal impact of the environmental tax on growth and welfare. When the positive influence of human capital is added into preferences (by explicitly modelling the home production sector), we find that the...
